2009 Preservation Studies Summer Field School: “Cities of the Dead: Above-Ground Cemetery Preservation, Conservation, Documentation Methodology and History”

The 2009 Preservation Studies Summer Field School will be offered by the Tulane School of Architecture Preservation Studies Program and Preservation Trades Network in partnership with the 1772 Foundation, National Center for Preservation Training and Technology, World Monuments Fund and Save Our Cemeteries.

In Applied Conservation Field Work PRST-647, students will learn via field work historically appropriate treatments for 19th century above-ground tombs. The Taylor Tomb in the Secret Garden of Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 will serve as one case study. Students will work under the tutelage of master craftsmen to learn about lime-based building technology in plaster, mortar, limewash and masonry applications. (2 Credits)

Field Studies in Historic Preservation PRST-646 will be a seminar taught by professors in the Tulane School of Architecture Preservation Studies Program. Topics include architectural history, preservation technology, landscape architecture, funerary iconography and history of New Orleans Cemeteries. Students will learn how to navigate through local archives to collect research for individual papers and group projects. (3 Credits)

Total cost for 5 credit hour Field School $4,125

Lodging: Double occupancy rooms with access to a communal kitchen and lounge will cost $418 per student for housing July 13th - July 31st. (Saturday check out on August 1st). A limited number of small scholarships and travel stipends may become available through grant funding.

2008 Preservation Field School, Holy Cross Neighborhood, Lower 9th Ward New Orleans, Louisiana, June 9 - August 1, 2008

The World Monuments Fund, Preservation Trades Network, and the University of Florida sponsored an interdisciplinary eight-week program that combined historic preservation, traditional trades, green design, and sustainable construction. Graduate students in historic preservation, architecture and engineering from the University of Texas, Florida A&M University, Harvard, and Florida Gulf Coast University traveled to New Orleans in June to participate in the field school program.

The students worked with instructors from the University of Florida and the Preserrvation Trades Network to help restore historic structures in Holy Cross, a neighborhood located in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. Holy Cross was severely damaged by hurricane Katrina. Subjects covered in the eight-week field school included:

  • Survey, documentation, and pathologies of flood damaged historic buildings
  • Sustainable design, conservation and rehabilitation practices
  • Repair and reuse of wooden window sash, porch and trim elements
  • Repair and conservation of interior finishes
  • Repair of masonry and wood structural systems
